Description

A delicious and hearty Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes recipe combining tender ground beef with sautéed onions and bell peppers, simmered in a savory sauce and topped with melted cheddar cheese, served on toasted brioche buns.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 lb Ground Beef, 80% or 85% lean
  • 1 Onion, small, ½ diced, ½ minced
  • 1 Bell Pepper, green, diced

Sauce and Flavorings

  • 1 Cup Beef Broth
  • 2 Tablespoons Ketchup
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • ½ teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Black Pepper, fresh ground
  • 1 Tablespoon Cornstarch
  • 1 Tablespoon Butter

Cheese and Bread

  • 8 oz Cheddar Cheese, or mozzarella
  • 6 Buns, brioche hamburger

Instructions

  1. Heat the skillet: Place a large skillet over medium-high heat and allow it to become hot.
  2. Brown the ground beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet and let it develop a deep brown crust before breaking it apart for the most flavorful, caramelized meat.
  3. Sauté the vegetables: Remove the beef from the pan, leaving the fat behind. Add butter, the diced and minced onion, and diced bell pepper. Let the vegetables brown undisturbed for 1-2 minutes, stir gently, then brown for another 1-2 minutes to develop flavor.
  4. Return beef and remove excess grease: Eliminate any excess grease from the pan. Return the browned ground beef to the skillet.
  5. Prepare the thickening mixture: In a small measuring cup, whisk together beef broth and cornstarch until smooth.
  6. Add sauce components: Stir in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper into the skillet. Then pour in the beef broth and cornstarch mixture, whisking to combine all flavors evenly in the pan.
  7. Simmer and thicken: Continue cooking the mixture for 3-5 minutes until most of the liquid is absorbed and the sauce has thickened to a moist, sloppy joe consistency.
  8. Add cheese: Turn off the heat, then stir in the shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese until melted and well incorporated.
  9. Toast the buns: In a separate pan, melt a small amount of butter over medium-high heat and toast the brioche buns until golden and crisp. Remove and place on a serving plate.
  10. Assemble and serve: Spoon the cheesy meat mixture generously onto the toasted buns and serve immediately for a comforting meal.

Notes

  • This Philly cheesesteak sloppy joe meat mixture can be frozen for up to 6 months for convenient future meals.
  • Use either cheddar or mozzarella cheese based on your preference for melting and taste.
  • To keep the buns from getting soggy, toast them just before serving.
