Description
This French Onion Rice recipe combines the rich, caramelized flavor of slow-cooked onions with savory beef consommé and French onion soup, baked to perfection alongside tender long-grain rice. It’s a comforting, flavorful side dish that pairs wonderfully with a variety of meals.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Rice and Broth Mixture
- 1 1/2 cups long-grain white rice
- 1 (10.5 ounce) can beef consommé
- 1 (10.5 ounce) can French onion soup
- 1 1/2 cups water
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Caramelized Onions
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 teaspoon sugar
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: Warm the olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions and sugar. Cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are very soft and caramelized, which takes about 25 to 30 minutes.
- Prepare the Rice Mixture: While the onions caramelize, add the rice, beef consommé, French onion soup, water, dried thyme, salt, and pepper to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Stir well to combine all ingredients evenly.
- Combine Onions and Rice: Once the onions are fully caramelized, spread them evenly over the rice mixture in the baking dish to ensure the flavors meld during baking.
- Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish tightly with foil and bake at 425°F (220°C) for 30 minutes. This allows the rice to begin absorbing the liquid while cooking gently.
- Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil, stir the rice gently, and continue baking uncovered for an additional 30 minutes. This step ensures the rice is tender and the liquid has fully absorbed.
- Rest and Serve: Let the rice stand for 5 minutes after baking. Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish optionally with fresh thyme or parsley. Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
- Caramelizing onions slowly is key to developing deep flavor—resist the urge to increase the heat.
- Make sure the baking dish is well greased to prevent sticking.
- For a vegetarian variation, substitute vegetable broth and French onion soup that do not contain meat products.
- This recipe pairs well with grilled meats or roasted vegetables.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop or microwave.
