This Pizza Grilled Cheese combines the gooey, melty goodness of classic grilled cheese with the bold flavors of pizza. Featuring buttery, seasoned bread, marinara sauce, mozzarella, Parmesan, and turkey pepperoni, it’s an easy and delicious twist perfect for a quick lunch or snack.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Bread
- 4 slices of bread (sourdough, white, or whole wheat)
- 2 tbsp butter (softened)
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp Italian seasoning
For the Filling
- ½ cup marinara or pizza sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 12 slices of turkey pepperoni (or your preferred topping)
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh basil (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Bread: Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. Then, sprinkle garlic powder and Italian seasoning over the buttered side to infuse the bread with extra pizza flavor as it toasts.
- Assemble the Sandwich: Place two slices of bread, buttered sides down, on a flat surface. Spread the marinara sauce evenly on the inside of each slice. Next, layer shredded mozzarella, grated Parmesan, turkey pepperoni, and any additional toppings you prefer. Top with the remaining bread slices, ensuring the buttered sides are facing up.
- Toast the Sandwich: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Carefully place the sandwiches in the pan and cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side. Press down slightly with a spatula to help the sandwich cook evenly. Flip carefully and continue cooking until the bread is golden brown and the cheeses are completely melted.
- Serve and Enjoy: Remove the grilled cheese sandwiches from the skillet and allow them to cool slightly for about a minute. Slice them in half and garnish with fresh chopped basil if desired. Serve alongside extra marinara sauce for dipping.
Notes
- Use medium-low heat to prevent the bread from burning before the cheese melts.
- Feel free to substitute turkey pepperoni with any other favorite pizza toppings like mushrooms, olives, or bell peppers.
- For a vegetarian option, omit the turkey pepperoni or replace it with plant-based alternatives.
- You can use any type of bread, but thicker slices like sourdough provide a sturdier sandwich.
- Fresh basil adds a nice aroma and flavor but is optional.
