Ingredients
Scale
Bread and Butter
- 4 slices of bread (sourdough, white, or whole wheat)
- 2 tbsp butter (softened)
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp Italian seasoning
Filling
- ½ cup marinara or pizza sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 12 slices of turkey pepperoni (or your preferred topping)
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh basil (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Bread: Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each bread slice. Sprinkle the buttered sides evenly with garlic powder and Italian seasoning to add extra pizza-flavored aroma and taste as they toast.
- Assemble the Sandwich: Place two slices of bread on a flat surface with the buttered sides facing down. Spread the marinara sauce evenly on the inside of each slice. Next, layer shredded mozzarella, grated Parmesan, and turkey pepperoni over the sauce. Add any additional toppings if desired. Cover with the remaining two slices of bread, buttered side up.
- Toast the Sandwich: Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place the assembled sandwiches onto the pan. Cook each side for 3 to 4 minutes, pressing gently with a spatula to help the sandwich toast evenly. Carefully flip the sandwiches and continue cooking until the bread turns golden brown and all cheeses are melted thoroughly.
- Serve and Enjoy: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and allow them to cool for about a minute. Slice each sandwich in half and garnish with freshly chopped basil for a lively, fresh flavor. Serve warm alongside extra marinara sauce for dipping.
Notes
- Use medium-low heat to avoid burning the bread before the cheese melts.
- Feel free to substitute turkey pepperoni with other pizza toppings such as mushrooms, olives, or bell peppers for a vegetarian option.
- Fresh basil adds a nice burst of flavor but can be omitted if unavailable.
- For a crispier crust, consider using sourdough bread.
- Butter should be softened to spread evenly and prevent tearing the bread.
