Ingredients
Scale
Onions
- 4 large sweet onions
Meat and Cheese
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (lean mix recommended)
- 4 slices beef bacon (crispy and smoky)
- 1 cup (120 g) shredded cheddar cheese (sharp or mild)
Seasonings
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Others
- 1 tbsp olive oil (for drizzling)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the stuffed onion bombs.
- Prepare the onions: Peel the outer layers of the large sweet onions, then slice off the tops carefully, making sure not to pierce the base. Scoop out the insides, leaving about a half-inch thick onion shell intact for stuffing.
- Cook the beef bacon: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the beef bacon slices until crispy. Remove from skillet, let cool slightly, then chop into bite-sized pieces.
- Brown the ground beef: Using the same skillet with rendered bacon fat, cook the ground beef over medium heat until fully browned, approximately 6-8 minutes.
- Mix filling ingredients: Add the chopped bacon, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to the browned beef. Stir to combine all flavors evenly.
- Add cheese: Fold in the shredded cheddar cheese to the beef mixture, allowing it to melt slightly for a cheesy, creamy texture.
- Stuff the onions: Carefully pack each hollowed onion shell tightly with the beef, bacon, and cheese mixture.
- Bake the stuffed onions: Place the stuffed onions upright in a baking dish. Drizzle the olive oil over them, cover with aluminum foil, and bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
- Finish baking uncovered: Remove the foil and continue to bake the onions uncovered for an additional 15-20 minutes to develop a golden finish and tender texture.
Notes
- Slice the onion tops carefully without piercing the base to make stuffing easier and prevent leaks.
- Use the chopped onion scraps sautéed in the beef fat to add extra flavor to the filling and reduce waste.
