Description
Festive Frizzled Onions are crispy, thinly sliced yellow onions soaked in buttermilk, coated with seasoned flour, and deep-fried until golden and crunchy. Perfect as a flavorful topping for burgers, steaks, or salads, these onions add a delightful crunch to any dish.
Ingredients
Scale
Onions and Marinade
- ½ pound yellow onions (2 to 3 small), very thinly sliced and separated into individual rings
- 1½ cups buttermilk
Coating
- 1½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
Frying
- Canola oil, for frying (amount will vary according to the size of your pot)
Instructions
- Slice Onions: Thinly slice the yellow onions into individual rings ensuring they are very thin to achieve a crispy texture when fried.
- Soak in Buttermilk: Place the onion rings in a bowl and pour 1½ cups of buttermilk over them. Allow the onions to soak for about 15 to 20 minutes. This helps tenderize the onions and enhances flavor.
- Prepare Flour Coating: In a separate bowl, combine 1½ cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of salt. Mix well to evenly distribute the salt.
- Heat Oil: Pour canola oil into a deep pot or skillet to a depth of about 2 inches. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C), which is ideal for deep frying.
- Coat Onions: Remove the onions from the buttermilk mixture in small batches, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge them thoroughly in the seasoned flour to coat all sides evenly.
- Fry Onions: Carefully place the coated onions into the hot oil in a single layer, being mindful not to overcrowd the pot. Fry for about 2 to 3 minutes or until the onions turn golden brown and crisp.
- Drain Excess Oil: Using a slotted spoon, transfer the fried onions onto a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
- Serve: Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your festive frizzled onions as a delightful crunchy garnish or side dish.
Notes
- Ensure onions are sliced very thinly for perfect crispiness.
- Maintain oil temperature to avoid soggy or burnt onions.
- Do not overcrowd the frying pot to allow even cooking.
- Buttermilk soaking adds flavor and helps the coating stick better.
- Best served fresh for maximum crunch.
