Ingredients
Scale
Sausage Mixture
- 1 lb (450g) sausage meat or ground sausage
- ½ cup finely diced onion
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 tsp dried sage
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- ¼ tsp ground black pepper
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp olive oil
Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Prepare the Sausage Mixture: In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely diced onion and minced garlic, sautéing until softened and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and transfer to a mixing bowl. Combine with sausage meat, dried sage, dried thyme, black pepper, and salt. Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the herbs and seasoning.
- Prepare the Pastry: Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet on a floured surface to smooth it out if necessary. Cut the pastry into 2-3 strips depending on desired roll size.
- Assemble the Sausage Rolls: Divide the sausage mixture into equal portions. Form each portion into a long sausage shape and place it in the center of each pastry strip. Fold the pastry over the sausage mixture, sealing the edges by pressing gently. Use a fork to crimp the edges and create a decorative seal.
- Apply Egg Wash: Brush the top of each sausage roll generously with the beaten egg. This will give the pastry a beautiful golden color when baked.
- Bake the Sausage Rolls: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the sausage rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and the sausage meat is cooked through.
- Serve: Allow sausage rolls to cool slightly before serving warm as a delicious party snack or appetizer.
Notes
- For a spicier kick, add a pinch of chili flakes to the sausage mixture.
- Ensure the puff pastry is properly thawed to avoid cracking during rolling.
- These sausage rolls can be made ahead and reheated in the oven for 5-7 minutes before serving.
- Use gluten-free puff pastry to make this recipe gluten-free.
