Description

These Christmas Sausage Rolls are a festive and savory appetizer perfect for holiday gatherings. Made with seasoned sausage meat, aromatic herbs, and wrapped in flaky puff pastry, they deliver a delightful combination of flavors and textures. Easy to prepare and bake, these sausage rolls make for a crowd-pleasing snack or party treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausage Mixture

  • 1 lb (450g) sausage meat or ground sausage
  • ½ cup finely diced onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp dried sage
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil

Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sausage Mixture: In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely diced onion and minced garlic, sautéing until softened and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and transfer to a mixing bowl. Combine with sausage meat, dried sage, dried thyme, black pepper, and salt. Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the herbs and seasoning.
  2. Prepare the Pastry: Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet on a floured surface to smooth it out if necessary. Cut the pastry into 2-3 strips depending on desired roll size.
  3. Assemble the Sausage Rolls: Divide the sausage mixture into equal portions. Form each portion into a long sausage shape and place it in the center of each pastry strip. Fold the pastry over the sausage mixture, sealing the edges by pressing gently. Use a fork to crimp the edges and create a decorative seal.
  4. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the top of each sausage roll generously with the beaten egg. This will give the pastry a beautiful golden color when baked.
  5. Bake the Sausage Rolls: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the sausage rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and the sausage meat is cooked through.
  6. Serve: Allow sausage rolls to cool slightly before serving warm as a delicious party snack or appetizer.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of chili flakes to the sausage mixture.
  • Ensure the puff pastry is properly thawed to avoid cracking during rolling.
  • These sausage rolls can be made ahead and reheated in the oven for 5-7 minutes before serving.
  • Use gluten-free puff pastry to make this recipe gluten-free.
