Casserole Base
- 2 cups Bisquick mix
- 1 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
Beef and Vegetables
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 1 large sweet onion, sliced
- 1 large green bell pepper, sliced
- ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
Gravy
- 0.87 ounce brown gravy mix
- 1 cup water
Cheese
- 11 slices provolone cheese
Instructions
- Prepare the Casserole Base: In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of Bisquick mix, 1 cup milk, 1 large egg, and ¼ teaspoon black pepper. Stir until smooth and set aside.
- Cook the Ground Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook 2 pounds of ground beef until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess fat.
- Sauté the Vegetables: Add the sliced sweet onion and green bell pepper to the skillet with the beef, sprinkle ¼ teaspoon black pepper, and cook until the vegetables are tender, about 5-7 minutes.
- Prepare the Gravy Sauce: In a small saucepan, whisk together 0.87 ounces of brown gravy mix and 1 cup of water. Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently until the gravy thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
- Combine Beef Mixture with Gravy: Pour the prepared gravy over the beef and vegetable mixture in the skillet. Stir to combine evenly and remove from heat.
- Assemble the Casserole: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Pour the Bisquick batter into a greased 9×13-inch casserole dish and spread evenly. Spoon the beef and vegetable mixture over the batter.
- Add Cheese Layer: Arrange the 11 slices of provolone cheese evenly over the beef and vegetable mixture.
- Bake the Casserole: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve: Allow the casserole to cool for 5-10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm and enjoy your Philly Cheesesteak Casserole!
Notes
- For a more authentic Philly cheesesteak flavor, thinly slice ribeye steak instead of ground beef.
- Add mushrooms for extra depth of flavor.
- You can substitute provolone cheese with mozzarella or American cheese if preferred.
- Adjust black pepper to taste for more or less spice.
- Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and can be reheated in the oven or microwave.
