Description

Celebrate Halloween with these easy-to-make themed cupcakes featuring three spooky decoration ideas: spiders, worms, and graveyards. Each cupcake uses simple cupcakes topped with chocolate frosting and fun candy embellishments to create festive, creepy treats perfect for parties or festive gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale

Base Cupcakes

  • 12 unfrosted cupcakes

Spider Cupcake Decoration

  • ½ cup prepared chocolate frosting
  • 8 strips red licorice
  • 12 candy-coated milk chocolate pieces (such as M&M’s®)

Worm Cupcake Decoration

  • ½ cup prepared chocolate frosting
  • ¼ cup chocolate cookie crumbs
  • 4 gummy worm candies

Graveyard Cupcake Decoration

  • 1 cup prepared chocolate frosting
  • 4 rectangular or oval sandwich cookies (such as Milano®)
  • ¼ cup chocolate cookie crumbs

Instructions

  1. Prepare Base Cupcakes: Start with 12 unfrosted cupcakes at room temperature to ensure the frosting spreads smoothly.
  2. Spider Cupcake Decoration: Spread approximately a tablespoon of chocolate frosting evenly over each cupcake. Break red licorice strips into smaller pieces to form legs and arrange them around the edges to resemble spider legs. Place candy-coated chocolate pieces on the frosting as spider bodies. Repeat for the desired number of spider cupcakes.
  3. Worm Cupcake Decoration: Frost the cupcakes with chocolate frosting, then gently sprinkle chocolate cookie crumbs on top to mimic dirt. Place gummy worm candies on the surface, partially digging them into the frosting to look like worms crawling out of the cupcake.
  4. Graveyard Cupcake Decoration: Spread a generous amount of chocolate frosting on the cupcakes. Crumble some chocolate cookie crumbs over the frosting to create a dirt effect. Use sandwich cookies as tombstones by standing them upright on the cupcakes, embedding them securely into the frosting. Optionally, decorate with additional cookie crumbs for a realistic graveyard look.
  5. Serve: Arrange the decorated cupcakes on a platter and serve immediately or refrigerate briefly to set the frosting, enjoying a spooky Halloween treat.

Notes

  • Use prepared chocolate frosting for ease and consistency.
  • For the spider legs, cut licorice strips into quarters for easier handling.
  • To keep cookies from becoming soggy, add them just before serving.
  • Use room temperature cupcakes for easier frosting application.
  • These decorations can be adapted for other holidays by changing candy choices.
