Ingredients
Scale
Dinner Rolls
- 1 cup whole milk (240g), warm (around 110°F)
- 3 teaspoons active dry yeast or instant yeast
- ⅓ cup sugar (70g)
- 3 ¾ cups all purpose flour (490g)
- 1 large egg
- 1.5 teaspoons salt
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened at room temperature (85g)
- Egg wash: 1 egg yolk and 1 tablespoon milk
Garlic Butter
- ¼ cup salted butter (57g)
- 2–3 garlic cloves, finely chopped
- 1–2 tablespoons freshly chopped parsley
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: Warm the whole milk to about 110°F, making sure it’s not too hot to kill the yeast. Stir in the yeast and sugar, then let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy and bubbly, indicating the yeast is active.
- Mix the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the softened unsalted butter, egg, and the yeast mixture to the flour. Stir until a soft dough forms, then knead by hand or in a stand mixer for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm spot until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.
- Shape the rolls: Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and place them evenly spaced in a greased baking dish or sheet, allowing room for expansion.
- Second rise: Cover the shaped rolls again and let them rise until puffy, about 30-40 minutes.
- Prepare egg wash: Whisk together the egg yolk and tablespoon of milk. Gently brush the tops of the risen rolls with this egg wash to give them a beautiful golden color when baked.
- Bake the rolls: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- Make garlic butter: While the rolls bake, melt the salted butter in a small saucepan or microwave. Stir in the finely chopped garlic and parsley to infuse the butter with fresh flavor.
- Glaze the rolls: When the rolls come out of the oven, immediately brush the warm garlic butter over the top, ensuring every roll is coated with the savory garlic goodness.
- Serve warm: Let the rolls cool slightly before serving to enjoy their soft texture and buttery garlic flavor at its best.
Notes
- Make sure the milk is warm but not hot to properly activate the yeast.
- You can substitute salted butter for unsalted in the dough if preferred, but reduce additional salt accordingly.
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of garlic powder into the dough.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
- Reheat rolls wrapped in foil in a warm oven to restore softness.
