Ingredients
Scale
Candy Coating
- ½ bag pink Wilton Candy Melts
- ½ bag purple Wilton Candy Melts
- ½ bag blue Wilton Candy Melts
- ¾ tsp shortening (like Crisco), divided ¼ tsp for each color
Snack Base
- 6 cups Chex Rice Cereal
- 3 cups confectioner’s sugar (adjust for desired sweetness)
Instructions
- Prepare Candy Melts: Divide the Wilton candy melts evenly into three microwave-safe bowls, one for each color.
- Microwave Melts: Heat each bowl for 45 seconds, stir, then heat an additional 30 seconds. Stir again and heat for a final 30 seconds until completely melted and smooth.
- Add Shortening: Stir in ¼ teaspoon of shortening to each bowl of melted candy. This thins the candy melts for easier and smoother coating of the cereal.
- Coat Cereal: Place 2 cups of Chex Rice Cereal into a large Ziploc bag for each color. Pour the corresponding melted candy melt into each bag.
- Mix Cereal and Candy: Seal each bag and gently shake or roll it slowly to fully coat the cereal pieces without crushing them.
- Prepare Sugar Coating: Line a cookie sheet with waxed paper. Pour one color-coated cereal mixture onto the sheet and spread it out flat.
- Sift Confectioner’s Sugar: Using a sifter, evenly dust confectioner’s sugar over the warm candy-coated cereal. Gently lift the edges of the waxed paper and roll the mixture around to thoroughly coat the cereal.
- Chill to Set: Place the coated cereal on the waxed paper into the refrigerator for about 5 minutes to allow the candy coating to harden.
- Repeat Coating: Repeat spreading, sifting, rolling, and chilling the remaining two colors in the same manner.
- Optional Decoration: For added festive flair, sprinkle Easter-themed sprinkles or colored sanding sugar over the cereal before applying the confectioner’s sugar.
Notes
- This recipe yields about 6 cups of Easter Puppy Chow, enough for 8 servings.
- If candy melts are thick, adding shortening thins them out for a smoother coating.
- Feel free to swap pastel candy melt colors to fit your Easter or spring theme.
- Adjust the amount of confectioner’s sugar to control sweetness and powderiness.
- Shake and roll the coated cereal gently to prevent crushing pieces.
- Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week.
- Package in clear bags or mason jars with ribbons to make adorable Easter gifts or party favors.
