Description
These Crockpot French Dip Sandwiches are a hearty and flavorful meal featuring tender slow-cooked chuck roast simmered in a savory broth, served on crusty rolls with melted provolone cheese and a rich dipping jus made from the cooking liquid.
Ingredients
Scale
Meat and Broth
- 3 lb chuck roast
- 1 can (10.5 oz) beef consomme
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
Seasonings
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 tsp onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Sandwich Assembly
- 6 crusty sandwich rolls
- 6 slices provolone cheese
Instructions
- Prepare the Chuck Roast: Season the 3 lb chuck roast generously with salt, pepper, onion powder, and dried thyme on all sides to enhance the flavor before cooking.
- Assemble Ingredients in Crockpot: Place the seasoned chuck roast into the crockpot. Add the minced garlic, beef consomme, beef broth, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce around the roast, ensuring it is partially submerged in the liquid for even cooking.
- Slow Cook the Roast: Cover the crockpot with the lid and cook on low heat for 8 to 9 hours or on high for 5 to 6 hours, until the meat is tender and easily shredded with a fork.
- Shred the Meat: Once cooked, remove the chuck roast from the crockpot and shred it using two forks. Return the shredded beef back into the crockpot to soak up more juices.
- Prepare Sandwich Rolls: Slice the crusty sandwich rolls horizontally. Optionally, warm them in the oven or toaster for a few minutes until slightly crispy.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Pile the shredded beef generously onto the bottom half of each roll, top with a slice of provolone cheese, and close the sandwich with the top half of the roll.
- Melt Cheese (Optional): You can place the assembled sandwiches under a broiler for 1-2 minutes to melt the cheese if desired.
- Serve with Au Jus: Ladle some hot cooking liquid (au jus) from the crockpot into small bowls for dipping. Serve the sandwiches hot with the au jus on the side.
Notes
- To enhance flavor, brown the chuck roast in a skillet before slow cooking.
- Use crusty rolls like baguette or hoagie buns for best texture and sturdiness.
- If you prefer less salty sandwiches, reduce soy sauce slightly.
- Leftover au jus can be refrigerated and used as a flavorful base for soups or gravies.
- For an extra kick, add caramelized onions or sautéed mushrooms to the sandwich filling.
