Description
This Butter Burger recipe features juicy ground beef patties cooked with salted butter and caramelized sweet onions, served on toasted homemade buns with American cheese for a rich, indulgent burger experience.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Butter and Onion Mixture
- 12 tablespoons salted butter, softened and divided (1¼ sticks)
- 1 medium sweet onion, chopped
- 1 tablespoon water
- ¾ teaspoon kosher salt, divided
For the Burger Patties
- 1 pound 90% lean ground beef
- ¾ teaspoon ground black pepper
For Assembly
- 4 homemade burger buns, toasted
- 4 slices American cheese
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: In a skillet over medium heat, melt 6 tablespoons of the softened salted butter. Add the chopped sweet onions, 1 tablespoon water, and half of the kosher salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Set aside.
- Prepare the Beef Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, remaining ¾ teaspoon kosher salt, and ¾ teaspoon ground black pepper. Mix gently to combine, being careful not to overwork the meat. Form the mixture into four evenly sized patties.
- Cook the Burgers: Heat a large pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Add the remaining 6 tablespoons of butter and allow it to melt. Place the patties in the pan and cook for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness.
- Add Cheese: During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of American cheese on each patty and cover the pan briefly to melt the cheese.
- Toast the Buns and Assemble: Toast the homemade burger buns until golden. Spread some of the caramelized onions on the bottom bun, then add the cheesy burger patty. Top with more caramelized onions if desired and cover with the top bun.
- Serve: Serve immediately while hot and enjoy the rich flavor of the buttery, cheesy burger with sweet onions.
Notes
- You can substitute sweet onions with yellow onions if desired, though the flavor will be less sweet.
- For a leaner burger, choose ground beef with a lower fat content but expect less juiciness.
- Use homemade buns for the best flavor, but store-bought toasted buns work well too.
- Butter is key to flavor; do not skip or substitute with margarine.
- Adjust salt and pepper to taste depending on preference.
