  • 1 cup whole milk

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk (more if needed)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (163°C). Grease and flour a bundt or tube pan.
  2. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the top.
  7. Bake for 70–80 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. For the frosting: In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in cocoa powder until smooth. Remove from heat and whisk in powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until glossy and smooth. Add more milk as needed to reach desired consistency.
  10. Pour frosting over cooled cake and let it set before serving.
